Eastern Oregon has always been a magical place. Eons ago, nature began shaping the land and the inhabitants, leaving behind a fascinating story. At one time, the region was a lush jungle and actually the coastline of what became Oregon. Cataclysmic volcanic activities brought walls of burning lava. Much later, glaciers scraped their mark across the landscape. Creatures such as bear dogs and three-toed horses once roamed here. When humans arrived, legends were born and it became a sacred homeland to the early inhabitants. For the past 200 years, tales of great rivers, towering mountains and fertile soil have enticed people to leave their homes and travel to this land of eastern Oregon.
Today, you can learn about the pre-historic creatures as recorded in their fossils. Or listen to an elder, a pioneer, a miner or a rancher tell their stories. Hear the ancient languages and music of the native people. The secrets of a Chinese herbal doctor are hidden in the midst of his 100 year old home. Smell the sage and hear the story of an early Basque sheep herder coming to America. Come discover Eastern Oregon! Our people, our history, our culture are still inspiring songs, poetry, and passion. Take home some memories of your own.
