Accessibility

When we say accessibility...

Accessibility is about removing barriers so that everyone can experience the world to the fullest extent possible (and in ways that work for our minds and bodies). The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) is an important tool, but the ADA alone is not enough to make spaces accessible to everyone.

Our focus is on people with disabilities, but accessibility can also refer to addressing language, technology, and economic barriers.

We’re learning that there are several key barriers to accessibility (for people with disabilities), including:

  1. Easy-to-find, accurate, and detailed accessibility information
  2. Actual barriers at the location and low awareness of alternatives that could be offered
  3. Low employee awareness/comfort with how to respectfully serve people with disabilities

Addressing these barriers are the focal points of our accessibility programming. Although our focus is on improving the visitor experience, this work also makes our communities more accessible to those who live in them.

We recognize that our region has room to grow when it comes to accessibility.  Learn more about our work and find other resources below:
